𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐀𝐈 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭?

Before you decide, you may want to consider several critical factors worth noting:

𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐠: AI interpretation may sometimes lag by over 30 seconds, whereas a human interpreter works with a delay of no more than five seconds. In a fast-moving discussion, that delay alone can change the entire flow of communication.

𝐍𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬: AI can struggle with complex numbers, especially when they include many zeros, resulting in errors.

𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐜𝐡: AI interpretation must decide which speaker to prioritize, often resulting in loss of information. In many cases, the final part of a sentence is not interpreted at all.

𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐬: In multilingual environments, AI interpretation tools can struggle to identify the correct language. It can take several sentences before the switch, and if the system fails to recognize the language, it may repeat the original language (e.g. English to English).

𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐧 𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐫𝐬: When AI tools fail to recognize names or proper nouns, they often guess. The results can be striking: Haiti becomes “Heidi”, Greece becomes “Chris”, French: Tu me manques (I miss you) becomes “You are missing me,” Dutch: Wir gingen essen (We went out to eat) becomes “We went food.”

𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲: Advanced terminology can pose real challenges for AI interpretation, sometimes leading to significant mistakes. For instance, Hepatitis in English was rendered as Ebola in Arabic, while stratified health in Chinese became airplane health in other languages.

𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠: AI interpretation tools may rely on built-in biases — e.g. assuming that senior professionals are men. Human interpreters draw on context and professional judgment to interpret accurately.

𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲: AI interpretation sounds often monotonous, making it difficult to follow for more than a few minutes.

𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫:

𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 & 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 – who ensures that the interpreted content is not intercepted, stored or shared online with outsiders?

𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 – who is responsible when AI interpretation gets it wrong?

All these factors can seriously affect the quality of a meeting and may also create reputational risks for the host. The examples above may seem amusing, but errors of this kind can undermine or even ridicule the speaker.

AI can complement human expertise. But when accuracy, reputation, and diplomacy are on the line, human interpreters remain essential.

More than halfway through the Danish EU Presidency, we are now looking forward to the big COSAC plenary meeting from November 30 to December 2 in Copenhagen. Preparations have been underway for over a year, and a large number of conference interpreters are engaged in all EU languages.
COSAC was established in 1989 and is a cooperation between the national parliaments of all EU countries and representatives from the European Parliament, who meet to discuss current political issues within the EU.
In the spring of 2023, the meeting was held in the Swedish Parliament with more than 50 of our conference interpreters. In large part, the same professional interpretation team, with the same project managers—Leena Zacho from TolkeSekretariatet, Ulla Petré, and Mari Spetz from Interprex Scandinavia AB—will now provide interpretation for the Danish Folketinget at the Tivoli Congress Center.

Who would you prefer to assist you if you had a heart attack: a neurologist or a cardiologist?
Probably the one who is as skilled as the other but has that particular expertise that is crucial for a positive outcome.
Both specializations are equally important depending on the situation at hand.

Court interpreters, with their deep knowledge of the local legal system, are indispensable in regular court trials, where they work using both whispering as well as consecutive interpreting techniques whereas conference interpreters are professionally trained in simultaneous interpreting technique that is typically used in arbitrations.

The role of a conference interpreter includes thorough preparation regarding the subject matter, as well as an understanding of and experience in specialized fields such as international law and finance — competencies that are all crucial in high-stakes international arbitration contexts.

Arbitration settings can also be diplomatically sensitive and require interpreters who can convey not just literal meaning but tone, nuance, and formality — a key skill of experienced conference interpreters!

For a successful multi-lingual meeting, it is crucial to get interpreters with the appropriate qualifications and competence to interpret between the meeting languages. However, interpreter is not a protected title. Anyone can call themselves interpreter or choose to take on assignments in a language direction they are not qualified for, such as interpreting from Swedish into English, although English is merely one of their passive languages.

Our project managers will select the appropriate interpreters for your meeting, to ensure that you get a safe and professional result – the kind of high-level interpretation that you expect. That is one of the advantages with booking your interpreters through an agency, like Interprex.

We´ll be happy to help!
